On Tuesday night local climatologist Phil Barone gave a presentation about his business, California Weather& Earth Sciences, LLC (See the complete meeting video below). Barone produces weather forecasts for businesses around the world. Some customers keep his company on retainer, while others call on his services temporarily.
He produces a“Daily Weather Planner” (DWP) for his customers. The forecast is either faxed or emailed to movie production companies, construction companies and other businesses that need accurate weather predictions. His predictions are very local in nature, and he can look ahead two and one half days andeven up to 2 ½ weeks.
Barone calls himself a climatologist rather than a meteorologist. He uses models and other information to determine the weather. He uses the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to help with his forecasts.
He mentioned a specific model he likes to use. The Global Forecast System (GFS) is global numerical weather prediction model run by NOAA. The model is updated four times per day and can forecast up to 16 days in advance.
Barone says the Pacific Ocean helps keep our weather in check. In fact, he believes the ocean is an important factor for weather around the world. Barone talked about El Ninos and La Ninas.
He made a great presentation. He also told us to expect snow in the upper Pinon Hills area this weekend, so cover your flowering trees.
